Web and proxy port numbers beyond 80 and 443

By Liam CooperOctober 27, 2026IANA registry as updated October 26, 2026

The registry assigns port 80 to http and 443 to https, both citing RFC 9110, “HTTP Semantics” (June 2022). The name http-alt is registered on three numbers, 591, 8008 and 8080; 8443 is assigned to pcsync-https and 1080 to socks. Port 3128 belongs to ndl-aas, an “Active API Server Port”, and 8000 to irdmi.

The registry entries for these numbers do not always carry the names people expect: 3128 and 8000, for example, have labels with no web term in them. This article lists the entries from the registry file, so each name can be checked rather than assumed.

Port 80 is one of only 12 numbers with three or more names: http, www and www-http, with the second and third marked in the registry as duplicates of the first. 80 and 443 are also among the 88 numbers with an SCTP entry. The three http-alt entries are older than the date field and carry no registration date; the one on 591 is labelled “FileMaker, Inc. - HTTP Alternate (see Port 80)”.

On 8888 the registry splits the number by transport: ddi-tcp-1 on TCP and ddi-udp-1 on UDP, both NewsEDGE server entries. Port 81 has no assignment on any protocol.

Names containing http

46 registered names carry “http” or “https” as a separate part of the name; 16 of them end in “https”. Many come in pairs on neighboring numbers. The pairs below pass this site's counterpart rule, a plain name and its TLS form with a label that says so.

Of these 14 pairs, 9 sit on adjacent numbers and in 4 the TLS form has the lower number, as with pcsync-https on 8443 and pcsync-http on 8444. The classic pair, 80 and 443, is 363 numbers apart.

Distance varies widely within the family. Apart from 80 and 443, the pair furthest apart is tungsten-http on 9762 and tungsten-https on 9443, 319 numbers apart. Below 1024 the registry holds one more http pair besides 80 and 443: oob-ws-http on 623 and oob-ws-https on 664.

The labels of the http-alt entries still point back to the original: on 8080 the registry reads “HTTP Alternate (see port 80)”, while 8008 reads simply “HTTP Alternate”. None of the three cites an RFC, and none has a TLS form under the counterpart rule; pcsync-https on 8443 belongs to a different name family.

The http family is also a TCP and UDP family. Of the 48 entries with “http” or “https” as part of the name, 2 are assigned on TCP alone and 2 also have an SCTP entry; every other one holds both TCP and UDP.

Numbers ending in 443

Several vendors registered TLS services on numbers that end in 443. Of the ten numbers from 1443 to 10443 that end in 443, 4 carry a name with “https” in it: sun-sr-https on 6443, oracleas-https on 7443, pcsync-https on 8443 and tungsten-https on 9443. The others belong to unrelated services, such as spss on 5443 and ies-lm on 1443.

Around 8080

The numbers right above http-alt on 8080 are a good example of how dense the registry is in this part of the User Ports. 8081 to 8090 hold sunproxyadmin, us-cli, us-srv, websnp, d-s-n, simplifymedia, radan-http and opsmessaging, while 8085 and 8089 have no assignment. The page for ports 8000–8999 counts 222 assigned numbers in the block, 166 of them dated.

When http names were registered

Only 24 of the http-named entries carry a registration date. The earliest recorded dates are in April 2002, for appserv-https on 4849; the latest is June 13, 2008, for radan-http on 8088. No http-named entry carries a later registration date.

Proxy entries

The registry has no single proxy number. 29 service names contain “proxy” and 35 labels mention it, spread from scx-proxy on 470 to pmproxy on 44322. socks on 1080 is the one with a protocol name of its own; sunproxyadmin on 8081 (registered August 2005) is the entry on the number next to 8080. A lookup for “proxy” lists them all.

Reading the range pages

The page for ports 8000–8999 lists every assigned number in that block, including the ones between 8080 and 8443, and shows which numbers have no entry. For the System Ports, ports 400–499 shows 443 among its neighbors.
